Best of Mann Landers: The “puppy prop”

Dear Mann Landers,

Have you ever been to the park or walking down the street and noticed the amount of women that will flock to a man with a puppy?  It could be pissing rain and a woman will stop dead in her tracks and talk for hours to a man with a puppy?

Why are women so enamoured with puppies?  I don’t get it!

Dear Puppy Love Envy,

The truth is that women love everything cute and cuddly – puppies, kids, teddy bears, etc.  The source of their love comes from their inherent maternal nature.  Whether they’re conscious of it or not, women love youthful creatures that need to be cared for.  Now, you need to turn your envy into understanding… and then your understanding into action; your action into results; and your results into memories for when you’re old and married.

So, why do women flock to men with puppies?  The answer lies in a long sequence of instinctual thoughts within a woman’s mind.  Imagine a woman is walking down the street and a man steps in her field of view carrying a puppy.  Here is what goes through her head in a matter of nanoseconds:

(1) “Look! It’s a puppy.”

  • The woman has spotted the puppy.

(2) “I love puppies… :-)”

  • She has associated the puppy’s youthful looks with what must be love.

(3) “I’m so happy now!”

  • The woman’s emotional state is now warm, positive and open … She is vulnerable.

(4) “Look! It’s a young man with that puppy.”

  • The owner has been identified and the attention has shifted ever so slightly … The man must capitalize.

(5) “Wow! He owns a puppy!”

  • The woman thinks to herself what a kind and responsible person to own such a cute and cuddly puppy … Her interest toward the man with the puppy grows.

(6) “He’s kind of cute!”

  • The woman has projected the puppy’s cuteness onto the man, and the man is suddenly appealing.
  • Any quarter decent looking man will garner this reaction – you could be sporting an eye-patch, a teen-stache and facial herpes and you’ll still get this reaction.

(7) “This man is a better person than my father and better looking than my last boyfriend.  I must have him at once”.

  • After revealing the puppy’s name and breed, she is fixated on the man’s ability to communicate, listen, empathize and make love with his eyes … She is his for the taking.
  • This is the man’s window – he must ask for her number or email and offer to meet her at the park one day.  Given her emotional state, the woman can’t/won’t say no.

You should now have a clear understanding of not only why women love a man with a puppy, but also how to capitalize on the situation if you were to ever find yourself in it.

Remember … they don’t call them labrador retrievers for nothing ; )
